Corners of New Orleans
There are corners of this city that don't make it into the guidebooks, quiet stretches of lakeshore where the water catches light like hammered silver and live music just happens, the way it does everywhere here.
Today's duet: Kass and Dave, with Dave playing what looked like an accordion-keyboard-guitar hybrid (complete with silver picking claws on his fingers) — a pedal steel guitar — and Kass moving between bass, guitar, and drums, holding down a groove that turned oyster-shucking into a ritual.
This is what I mean when I say New Orleans operates on a different frequency. It's not just that there's live music — it's the level of musicianship you encounter in the most unexpected places. A lakefront restaurant on a breezy Saturday afternoon. Musicians with instruments you've never seen before and skill that could command any stage in the world, playing like it's nothing because here, it is nothing. It's just what Saturday sounds like.
The richness is everywhere. You don't have to seek it out. You just have to show up, crack open an oyster, and let the city remind you what baseline excellence looks like.
With a second line in my step, wherever the rhythm carries me,
